Frequently Asked Questions
How do the devices work?
The IID's are handheld breath-alcohol analyzers that connect to the ignition system of a vehicle. Before starting the car, the driver must complete a breath test verifying his or her Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC) to be below a preset limit. If the BrAC test is at or above the pre-set limit the car will not start. There are many safeguards built-into the LifeSafer to prevent or detect unauthorized use or circumvention of the device.Am I eligible for installation?
Following conviction, the option of installing an interlock may be:- offered to the driver by the DMV/MVD
- ordered by the court
- requested by a defense attorney on behalf of the client, as a means of retaining some driving privileges
The court will issue an order calling for the installation within a fixed time period, e.g. 15-30 days, and then makes an appointment to have the system installed.

Do I need to have the device serviced throughout the program?
Yes, like all ignition interlock programs the driver must have the device calibrated every 60 days throughout the length of the program. The device will remind the driver when calibration is soon to be due. Servicing with Advantage is easy. The driver simply makes an appointment with one of our many locations. The calibration process usually only takes 7-10 minutes.
Aren’t there ways to bypass and "cheat" the device?
Interlocks have various anti-circumvention measures, such as having to blow at random intervals once the vehicle has been allowed to start or by taking your picture with a camera. Furthermore, devices have temperature and air gauges to make sure compressed air is not used.
Is it dangerous to do a running retest?
Not at all, Interlocks give people a few minutes to perform the retest. It is less dangerous than using a cell phone or a car stereo while driving. Can't I sell my vehicle in order to avoid having to install an interlock?
People can try, however the DMV monitors these transactions and will often require that all cars that the offender operates, not just owns, are equipped with an interlock (such as a family car).
